Every audiophile knows that some of the finest sounding CD's and LP's in the world are the result of the painstaking artistic efforts of the legendary Steve Hoffman of Decca, DCC Compact Classics, and S&P fame. VAC is pleased to note that, starting with DCC LPZ-2056, part of the magic you hear is the result of the VAC Renaissance One-Forty triode amplifiers used to power Mr. Hoffman's LP cutting lathes. VAC Renaissance monoblocks are also used to master DCC Gold CD's, starting with GZS-1125. Also in DCC's employ is the VAC CPA-1 Mk II triode preamplifier.

VAC is honored that Mr. Hoffman has chosen VAC instruments to assist him in producing the famous DCC discs, and we will do our part to help keep DCC at the cutting edge of sonic possibilities.

Known DCC recordings mastered with VAC electronics are shown below (updated 4 March 1999). Also see VAC High Fidelity Recordings.

MORE TO COME ... MORE TO COME ... MORE TO COME ... MORE TO COME ...

If I may be permitted a personal note, I have experienced a few great thrills at VAC, but none has been greater than seeing the VAC logo associated with the works artists such as Nat "King" Cole and Linda Ronstadt, two of my favorites.

As a very small child, perhaps four years of age, I fell in love with the sound of Nat Cole's voice. Just ask my parents; I drove them crazy to get his records to play on my portable (and tubed) Westinghouse record player. I was five years old when Nat Cole died of lung cancer, and I cried.

Most of us probably think of Nat simply as a singer of warm ballads, and certainly you will find that side of him on DCC's "Nat 'King' Cole - The Greatest Hits." However, you will also get a glimpse of two seldom seen sides of his talent. Many people forget that Nat was first a jazz pianist of amazing delicacy and imagination, who's influence is credited by many later jazz artists. Listen not only to the piano solo on "For Sentimental Reasons," but also for Nat's rare ability to play tasty jazz counterpoints to his own intimate and playful vocals. The other seldom noted side of Cole's work is his R&B ballads, hinted at here on "Send For Me." [I truly hope that DCC will one day reissue the "After Midnight" sessions, his last & highest fidelity jazz trio work. Sure, it's mono, but superb. Perhaps they'll augment that with "Midnight Flyer," which is perhaps Cole's best R&B side.]

In a similar vein, every teenage male in the 1970's fell in love with Linda Ronstadt. This DCC disc contains some of her very best., including Roy Orbison's "Blue Bayou" (also available on DCC).

What can I say? It is simply a great thrill for a kid who once played Nat Cole on his Westinghouse to have a role, however minor, in his continuing legacy. God has been kind to allow us to be productive in a field we love. Thank you, Steve Hoffman, for doing the work you do, and letting us play a part.
